Janie Hughes is the first woman to provide Public Communications and WiFi in the City of Palm Springs, and the first woman to joint venture with AT&T as a payphone provider.  She was recognized by AT&T as "Supplier of the Year" in 1995 and throughout the years has received numerous other awards and commendations.

Thomas Nolan, A.A.E., Executive Director, Palm Springs International Airport, quotes, "We were very pleased about how Janie understood the industry and all the changes taking place, then working with the Airport to satisfactorily transition into a program that was extremely beneficial to both parties.  She actually ended donating a significant amount of equipment and time to the airport to allow our pay phone program to continue and we really appreciate that."

Ms. Hughes recently spoke to members and industry leaders at the California Payphone Association meeting in Palm Springs, California, and from the podium, she stated, "I hope that I am starting a trend that will benefit our local government throughout the State of California followed by other states and their payphone associations.  My breaking news for the day is, please do not spend money to pull payphones and enclosures from the city streets and other government agencies.  It would be prudent and at the same time generous for you to donate this equipment to your respective cities and government offices to avoid the extinction of public communication that is so often needed for 911, urgent calls to family members, sensitivity to those in economic stress and of course, a method by which someone can call a loved one.  Another consideration is keeping service opportunities and infrastructure income stream which produces jobs.  The few bucks you can make on Ebay could never be equal to the goodwill and professional act of kindness."

Janie's commitment to Palm Springs as a humanitarian and philanthropist is well known throughout the Coachella Valley.  She was personally selected by the beloved and celebrated Ann Angel to serve on the Board of Directors of the Stroke Recovery Center.  Her financial support to the Stroke Recovery Center, Well in the Desert, Animal Samaritan and numerous other charities is accompanied by her tireless service as a volunteer in these organizations.

Janie is renowned for promoting tourism in Palm Springs through her service as a board member for the Palm Springs Walk of Stars where she has personally sponsored stars beginning with the Mamie Van Doren star in December of 2005.

On November 3, 2007, Janie Hughes was honored with a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars for her unending support, contributions and dedication to the Palm Springs community.
